Winner of a competition organized by Ravinala Airports last year, the Malagasy platform for promoting good deals Clicodeal launched on June 4, 2024 in Ivato a project aimed at involving travelers in the reforestation of the Big Island. Implemented with the reforestation company Bôndy, the initiative consists in putting a mangrove in the ground, each time a dedicated QR Code — displayed in Antananarivo airport — is scanned.

Supervised by the Bôndy company, the operations also aim to improve the living conditions of local communities, through the establishment of income-generating activities. Thus, in addition to involving 120 partner farmers in the implementation of reforestation near Majunga, the company has been supporting the development of beekeeping in the region since 2023, by providing training, and by financing the purchase of equipment for beekeepers. For the Bôndy company, each reforestation operation carried out on the island must be part of a broader approach aimed at offering local communities innovative and sustainable solutions to environmental and economic challenges in Madagascar.

An alarming environmental situation

Known for its exceptional biodiversity - over 80% endemic -, the country is now facing major challenges. The Big Island, which recorded a poverty rate of 80.7% in 2023, sees an average of 100,000 HA of its forests disappear annually, due in particular to the persistence of slash-and-burn agriculture by peasant communities, the illegal exploitation of precious resources and the massive production of charcoal — the main source of cooking energy in Madagascar. In 2019, it was estimated that the island had lost 44% of its natural forests in 60 years.

Faced with this situation, adopt the right reflexes during your trip to Madagascar.
